I am applying for the Cloud Administrator position at Facepunch because the role lines up closely with the kind of work I have been doing for most of my career.
I have over 17 years of hands-on IT experience across systems administration, networking, cloud infrastructure, databases, web services and security. I have worked in government, ISP and small-business environments, usually in roles where I have had to troubleshoot problems, support live systems and work across several areas of IT.
In my current role supporting passport modernisation and biometric border systems for the Government of Guyana, I work with Debian, Proxmox, Nginx, systemd, TLS, MySQL, Python and Flask. I also handle deployment automation, monitoring, backups, access control and production troubleshooting.
One project I am particularly proud of involved reducing a key operational dashboard from 25 database queries to 9 and improving its response time from 101 seconds to 25 seconds through query optimisation, indexing, caching and Python aggregation.
I also work in network operations at Novo Communications, where I support Linux and Windows servers, DNS, firewalls and BGP-based ISP infrastructure. A large part of that work involves troubleshooting network and application problems using logs, packet captures, service checks and practical problem solving.
I regularly use PowerShell, Bash, Python, C#/.NET and PHP to automate tasks and make systems easier to manage. I am comfortable working with Azure, AWS and Google Cloud Platform, and I have a strong networking background through my CCNA, Network+ and years of practical ISP experience.
What I like about this role is that it is not limited to one narrow area. It brings together cloud, networking, systems, automation, security and live services, which is exactly the type of environment I enjoy working in.
I am also genuinely familiar with Rust, both as a player and from the server administration side. I have built, administered and modded Rust servers alongside a friend, working with server configuration, updates, plugins, troubleshooting and the day-to-day challenges of keeping a live server running. Rust is the Facepunch game I know best, and my Steam name is gunsession.
I am very down to earth and patient when it comes to troubleshooting. I am always willing to learn something new when I do not already know it, and I prefer understanding why something failed rather than applying a temporary fix and moving on.
I am based in Trinidad and Tobago, with reliable high-speed fibre internet and power backup, and I am fully equipped for remote work.
